Prayer (fifth in a series)

When we confess, we are acknowledging that God is God (and we are not) by admitting the ways in which we’ve acted as if we are God. Confession clears away the clutter of lies and distortions we’ve hid behind and allows us to turn back and reclaim our rightful inheritance as our Father’s beloved sons and daughters. Prayer (fourth in a series)

The apostle, Paul, regularly gave thanks, even under the most trying or dangerous of conditions. In his first letter to the Thessalonians, he instructs us to do the same, for the sake of our spiritual health. He writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (5:18) Paul discovered that in every situation, good and bad alike, if one is attentive to God, there will be something for which to give thanks. By giving thanks in all circumstances he was protecting himself from the temptation of thinking, in times of great difficulty, that God had abandoned him. Continue reading

Prayer (third in a series)

The second reason someone may not be readily thankful is that they don’t think they have much for which to give thanks. He or she may also assume everyone else has it better in life than they do. I’ve often found myself in this category – polishing up my list of grievances instead of giving thanks for my blessings. On many occasions, when things would go wrong in my life my first response would be to feel sorry for myself. This is a dangerous spiritual trap; just as dangerous as pride. Continue reading
