Losing Control (eleventh in a series)

It was after a miscarriage, a time when I was also exhausted and disillusioned from the effects of trying to minister to others out of my own will power rather than the authority and grace of Jesus Christ, that I came to my senses. I confessed my willful and prideful behavior and resolved that Jesus would be in charge of my life from that point on. This began my journey in “losing control.” Yet, while I had taken an important first step by recognizing my problem, I had no clue what to do next. Every thought, every instinct and reflex I possessed had been honed to think of myself first and foremost. How was I to put the brakes on something so deeply ingrained and respond differently? Losing Control (ninth in a series)

With sin as our lord fear and anxiety will always be nipping at our heels. We will find ourselves haunted from time to time by the thought we haven’t done enough or that something will go wrong and we won’t be able to fix it. We will be hemmed in by an inability to forgive or receive forgiveness. We will lack the ability to be compassionate in a healthy way and we will probably find ourselves burdened by our own sins or the sins of others. To be sure, our self-image will be skewed and our relationship with God disrupted. Such is the life of someone who is not yoked to Jesus. This is the cost of not losing control. Continue reading

Losing Control (sixth in a series)

There is no grace or Sabbath rest (the peace which passes all understanding) when we’re operating under will power. Instead, we end up with a continual sense that there is yet one more thing that has to be done and the nagging fear that our work will not reflect favorably on us. But in his second letter to the Corinthians Paul gives us the Lord’s perspective on our service in God’s name: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (12:9) Continue reading
